BIOGRAPHY

Enrico Markus Essl (born 1970 in Linz, Upper Austria) is an Austrian photographer specializing in street photography. He grew up in Salzburg and now lives and works in Linz.

Essl has been engaged with photography since childhood. His passion developed across various photographic genres before he ultimately found his focus in street photography, which is now at the core of his artistic work.

As a self-taught photographer, Essl combines documentary observation with a clear, graphic visual language. His work is characterized by an emphasis on geometry, lines, colors, and urban structures, often paired with subtle moments of human behavior in public spaces.

His photographs are primarily created in urban environments across various European cities and are marked by a reduced, often minimalist aesthetic. People frequently appear in his compositions, though not always as the central subject; instead, they function as elements within a broader visual context.

In addition to his photographic practice, Essl works as a lighting technician in theater, which further shapes his sensitivity to light, staging, and spatial composition.

His work has been featured internationally in magazines, exhibitions, and publications, including various street photography platforms as well as his own photobooks and zines such as “Ganz Berlin ist eine Wolke.”

Essl’s photographic approach is based on intuition and openness: he sees himself as a “collector of images,” capturing moments of everyday urban life and later condensing them into coherent series.
